Emotional Availability/Attachment Topics
Our lab has been involved with the development of the Emotional Availability System (Biringen, 2008; Biringen, Robinson, & Emde, 1998) to evaluate the quality of parent-child relationships. The system includes the EA Scales, which refers to four scales on the adult side (sensitivity, structuring, non intrusiveness, and non hostility), and two scales on the child side (responsiveness to the adult and involvement of the adult). These qualities have been highly predictive of both concurrent and later aspects of positive parent and child outcomes (Biringen, Derscheid, Vliegen, Closson, & Easterbrooks, 2014). The system is the most commonly used measure of observed parent-child relationships, as discerned by Lotzin et al. (2015).
