In the Human Cardiovascular Physiology Laboratory, we are investigating how the body regulates muscle blood flow under a variety of conditions, including forearm exercise and blood pressure cuff inflation on the arm.
For our studies, we use the forearm as a “model” and there are little effects to the whole body. Currently the majority of our studies involve an arterial catheter, where our cardiologist places a catheter in an artery near the elbow. This procedure uses a bit of medicine to numb the area followed by a needle stick. The arterial catheter is a flexible plastic tube with a portal attached to it. This catheter is then used to take blood samples and infuse small doses of various medicines. Due to the small doses used, the effects are mainly on blood flow in the forearm and there are little effects to the whole body. To monitor levels of various circulating substances in the veins, a venous catheter will also be placed in a vein in the experimental arm (another brief needle stick). The venous catheter is also a flexible plastic tube with a portal (blood samples are taken through this portal). We occasionally have studies that involve only a venous catheter with blood samples taken to measure the release of various substances in response to interventions like exercise.
If you are interested in participating, we will need to schedule a preliminary visit that lasts about an hour. At this visit we will describe in more detail the study you would participate in, complete paperwork, a DEXA scan (to determine percent body fat and bone density), and answer any questions you might have. If you meet all of the criteria at the initial visit, you would come in for a second single-day visit when we would perform our experiment, which lasts anywhere from 3 to 4.5 hours. You will be compensated $15/hr on the study day for your time.
