Strengthening Families 10-14 Program
What is Strengthening Families 10-14 (SFP 10-14)?
SFP 10-14 is an evidenced-based, family-based prevention program shown to help youth, parents, and families make good decisions and become stronger. Through this program, youth learn skills on how to deal with peer pressure and stress, parents/caregivers learn proven parenting skills, and families work together to develop skills and practice strategies to help parents/caregivers and youth face today’s challenges.
Does the Strengthening Families 10-14 program work?
SFP 10-14 is listed as a Promising program in the Blueprints and Crime Solutions registries and an Effective program in OJJDP’s Model Programs. According to the Blueprints registry, SFP 10-14 has significantly impacted key individual and family risk and protective factors for substance use, including decreased early initiation of drug use (individual risk factor), decreased poor family management (family risk factor), increased attachment to parents (family protective factor), increased nonviolent discipline (family protective factor), and increased opportunities for prosocial involvement with parents (family protective factor). In a study conducted by Partnerships in Prevention Science Institute, SFP 10-14 had a return of $9.60 for every $1 dollar spent implementing the program.
What is the structure of SFP 10-14?
To implement the program, at least three trained facilitators are required (four are recommended). The SFP 10-14 facilitator training is a three-day in-person training conducted by Iowa State University or their certified trainers. Groups of three to four certified facilitators implement the program: one or two facilitate the parent session, one or two facilitate the youth session, and all facilitators share leadership in facilitating the family session. The program consists of 7 sessions occurring weekly. Before each session, participants met for a meal.
