The Richard Blackwell Gallery

American fashion designer/critic Richard Blackwell (1922-2008) was a CSU benefactor whose generosity is noted in the name of this intimate gallery space (500 sq. ft.) that was designed to showcase apparel and fashion. Exhibits are planned 2-3 years in advance by Avenir Museum curatorial staff in tandem with the Department of Design and Merchandising.

Opens January 27, 2026! The Fashion “Bug”: Insects In and On Our Cloth

In collaboration with the C.P. Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity.

From shimmering silk to the deep reds of cochineal dye, insects have always been involved in the act of making textiles, just as humans have been bitten by the fashion bug throughout history. Join us to explore insect impact and inspiration on what we wear.
