Virtual Tour Legend

Mattertag Posts—informational tags communicating key content—are embedded throughout each virtual tour; for the CSU-AVL project, a customized legend guides viewers through the virtual experience. The legend consists of four colors—green, gold, orange, and gray—each of which showcases specific information: green – architectural materials and/or features, gold – pictures, orange – floor plans, gray – published articles, light green—historic facts, and teal – videos.

The Hinsdale County Courthouse building is located in Lake City’s historic district at 317 Henson Street. It was designed by Jonathan Ogden and has an Italianate architectural style. The style is reflected in the overhanging eaves with paired decorative brackets and tall, narrow windows with pedimented window heads. Constructed in 1877, the Hinsdale County Courthouse is Colorado’s oldest county courthouse still in use.

The Hinsdale County Courthouse has held significant historic figures such as Susan B. Anthony and Alferd Packer. In 1877, Susan B. Anthony gave a speech in the courthouse and in 1885 and 1886 Alfred Packer’s trials took place in this courthouse as well. The courthouse has been in operation for 147 years, and could be considered one of the most iconic county courthouses in Colorado.

The St. James Episcopal Church building is located in Lake City’s historic district at 501 Gunnison Avenue. It was designed by H.E. Turner and J.B. Lyons in no specific architectural style. Constructed in 1875, the St. James Episcopal Church is the oldest Episcopal church on the Western Slope with original locally made pews that are still in use today.

The St. James Episcopal Church building originally served as a carpentry shop and later served as a school before it became the St. James Episcopal Church in 1877. The building itself has been in use for almost 150 years and continues to be historically important today.

The First Presbyterian Church building is located in Lake City’s historic district at 429 Gunnison Avenue Lake City, CO 81235. It was designed by George Darley and has a Carpenter Gothic style, inspired by the Gothic Revival era. Constructed in 1876, the First Presbyterian Church was one of the first churches, on the western slope of Colorado, to be built and completed

The First presbyterian Church is the oldest church on the Western Slope in Colorado, and still serves its intended use as a church. The Church has been in operation for 148 years and is one of the most notably significant churches in Lake City, Colorado.

The Hough Block building is located in Lake City’s historic district at 300 Silver Street. In 1880, John S. Hough purchased the property and had the two-story commercial building constructed in the Italianate architectural style. In 1882, Hough expanded the building with an adjoining brick structure at 304 Silver Street. The Hough Block is one of the many historic building that John S. Hough either developed alone or in partnership with others.

The Hough Block was built with brick and fire-resistant materials due to the aftermath of the “Great Fire” of 1879, which destroyed the business district made up of wood frame and log structures. The Hough Block and other buildings were built to create a new business district. The Hough Block has been in use for commercial purposes for over 140 years.

The Lake City Armory Hall building is located in Lake City’s historic district at 230 Bluff Street. Contractors David Hurd and J.W. Kraft constructed the building in the Italianate architectural style. The original owner of this building was the Lake City Building Association. Constructed in 1883, the Lake City Armory Hall was originally built to house the Pitkin Guard Armory as well as the Lake City Opera House.

The Lake City Armory Hall building has been used in many ways over the years. It was the headquarters for The Pitkin Guards of the state militia, it was an opera house, and it is now currently being used as a community center and sports facility. The Lake City Armory Hall has been in use for over 140 years.

The St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church building is located in Lake City’s historic district at 100 S. Silver Street. It was designed by an unknown architect in the Carpenter Gothic architectural style. The original building owner was the Catholic Archdiocese. It was designed in the Carpenter Gothic architectural style. Constructed in 1877-1878, the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church is the oldest Catholic church on the Western Slope of Colorado.

The St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church has been preserved throughout the years and underwent a restoration in 1987. The St. Rose of Lima church is one of the four prominent historic churches in Lake City, Colorado. The church has been in use for almost 150 years.

The Stone Finley Block Hinsdale County Museum building is located in Lake City’s historic district at 130 Silver Street. It was designed by the contracting firm, Bauer & Schultz, and its original owner was Henry Finley. The Finley Block was built in the Italianate architectural style. Constructed in 1877, the Finley Block was designed in the Italianate architectural style and housed Henry Finley’s mercantile business. It later served for several decades as the Odd Fellow Hall before being converted into the Hinsdale County Museum.

Henry Finley served as president of the Lake City Town Company and was a prominent figure in Lake City’s building development. This building is a great representation of how the Italianate style has been preserved over time due to its architectural features such as its exterior masonry quoins, narrow arched windows, and bracketed cornice. The Stone Finley Block has been in use for almost 150 years.

Finley Block Intergenerational Activity

The First Baptist Church building is located in Lake City’s historic district at 401 Bluff Street. It was constructed by the lumber firm Guionneau and Youmans and its original owner was the First Baptist Church.  The church combines elements of both the Carpenter Gothic and Queen Anne architectural style. Constructed in 1891, the First Baptist Church was, at the time, the most expensive church built in Lake City.

The First Baptist Church served as a church in its early prime before being vacant for a couple years in the 1930’s. The church and local community worked hard to preserve the church and got it back up and running as a Southern Baptist Church in the early 1960’s. The church still stands and remains as a Baptist Church just over 130 years later.
