What is the Textile Science Library and Laboratory?

The textile science library is attached to our innovative textile science laboratory classroom. It showcases textiles and fabrics from the historical to high-tech. This includes innovative fabrics with leading technology for the outdoor industry. The textile science laboratory is an innovative learning space, designed by Interior Architecture and Design students, that allows for textile testing, learning, and experimentation.

Location: The Gifford Building, third floor, on the south side of the building just outside the staircase from the Lake St. Entrance.

Who Uses the Textile Science Library and Laboratory?

The Textile Science Library and Laboratory is used by students in fashion and interior design. Its state-of-the-art facilities provide the space and technology needed to explore and understand the foundations of textile science.

Textiles and Apparel

Fashion designers, merchandisers, and product developers need a strong understanding of textiles to make informed choices about fiber selection, meet government regulations, and choose fabrics that best support their products. From selecting high-quality silks for a luxury brand to choosing high-performance technical fabrics for outdoor gear, a solid knowledge of materials is essential for apparel professionals.

Students learn about every step of fabric development including fiber, yarn construction, fabric construction, fabric dyes, finishes, and more.

Textiles and Interior Architecture and Design

Professionals in Interior Architecture and Design need a strong understanding of textiles to make informed material selections. Interior spaces are often subject to heavy use, so it is important for designers to choose carpets, drapes, furniture fabrics, and other materials wisely. In addition, professionals committed to sustainable material selection must understand the textile development process to make informed decisions.

Students use microscopes to identify fiber content of fabric. Fun fact: Did you know that wool can feel scratchy because the fibers are covered in little scales?

Research

Important and innovative research is conducted in the textile science lab. Dr. Li, a professor in the Department of Design and Merchandising and the Principal Investigator of the Smart Textiles and Nanotechnology Laboratory (STNL) at CSU, has been a pioneer in innovative textile technology. Her latest research has focused on developing a 3-D printed fabric that mimics the surface of shark skin and creating a textile patch that slowly administers medication to the wearer.

Students test different fabrics for flammability to help identify the fiber content. Flammability is an important aspect of fiber and is heavily considered when developing textiles for Personal Protective Equipment, like a fire fighter’s uniform and government regulated items like kids' pajamas.
