Supervised CACREP Accredited Practicum

The supervised practicum experience provides an opportunity to perform, under supervision, activities that a counselor would be expected to perform. The practicum focuses primarily on the development of individual and group counseling skills. All students are required to complete their practicum coursework (EDCO 686) by completing a minimum of 100 hours of practicum-related experience. Clinical practicum experience provides opportunities for students to serve clients in both at Colorado State University and northern Colorado communities.
All students complete their practicum experience at the Counseling and Career Development Counseling and Research Clinic in the Education Building serving both the campus community and the local community at large. Occasionally, the CCD Clinic will also offer experiences to work at satellite practicum sites to work with children within a school setting. In the past, these have been intended for students in the school counseling specialization. Students interested in this opportunity must have taken the EDCO 662 – Counseling Children and Adolescents course. The satellite practicum site is not guaranteed each year. Years in which the opportunity is offered enrollment may be my lottery based on eligible student interest.
Practicum Content Overview
Students complete supervised practicum experiences that total a minimum of 100 clock hours. Practicum includes the following:
- A minimum of 40 hours of direct service with clients to gain that experience in individual and group interactions. If the requirement of 10 hours of group facilitation is not met in the practicum, it must be met during internship. Regardless of the number of group facilitation hours, a minimum of 40 hours of direct client contact is required in practicum.
- A minimum of one hour per week of individual supervision over a minimum of one academic term by a qualified supervisor.
- A minimum of 1.5 hours per week of group supervision with other students in practicum over a minimum of one academic term by a faculty member or a supervisor under the supervision of a program faculty member.
- Evaluation of the student’s performance throughout the practicum, including a formal evaluation at midterm and the completion of the practicum.
- The practicum experience is a rich and immersive format. Per requirements from our national accreditation (CACREP) agency, the ratio of students to direct supervisor is not to surpass 6 students to 1 direct supervisor.
Quality Supervision
Each faculty member who provides on-campus practicum supervision has a degree from a program in counselor education or a closely related field, relevant professional experience, relevant professional credentials, and counseling supervision training and experience.

Tevera – Fieldwork Management Software
As a part of our program fee, students entering practicum are provided with a Tevera online account. Tevera is an online fieldwork education management software that the CCD program has adopted. The Tevera portal assists in managing practicum (and later internship) experiences. Students use Tevera throughout the program to engage in various fieldwork and program tasks and access their semesterly student reviews completed by faculty. Additionally, upon graduation, CCD alums are granted lifetime access to a Tevera alum account which can be used to track hours toward state licensure.
