Spring 2024 Campus Climate Assessment
In lieu of a Spring 2024 speaker, the College of Health and Human Sciences asked students to complete a climate survey. We are committed to providing the best possible environment for all individuals within our community, and an important step in creating a truly diverse, equitable, and inclusive community is understanding perspectives and experiences. The data collected will be used to understand the present climate in the College of Health and Human Sciences and to inform current and future decisions about supporting a diverse, inclusive, and vibrant campus community.

April 1, 2022 Dr. Gina Garcia, University of Pittsburgh
The College of Health and Human Sciences Social Justice Speaker Series hosted Dr. Gina Garcia, a leading scholar on Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), which are colleges and universities that enroll at least 25% Latinx undergraduate students. Dr. Garcia is an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh, teaching master’s and doctoral students pursuing degrees in higher education. Her research addresses three key intersecting areas: race and racism in higher education, Latinx college students, and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs).
Dr. Garcia presented virtually Transforming Hispanic Serving Institutions. In the presentation, she detailed the factors that, historically, have hindered Latinx students’ success in higher education. She presented her Decolonizing HSIs Framework, which utilizes nine organizational elements based in anti-racist practices. The audience is encouraged to think critically about how HSIs can be transformed using Garcia’s framework.

February 3, 2021 Dr. Nolan Cabrera, University of Arizona
At our inaugural social justice speaker series event, Dr. Nolan Cabrera, an associate professor at the University of Arizona, presented, “White Immunity: Working Through the Pedagogical Pitfalls of Privilege.” The speaker series is supported by Dean Lise Youngblade and organized by the college’s Diversity and Equity Advisory Committee.
Cabrera’s talk explores the historical development of whiteness and shows how white advantage developed through systemic racism to which white people were socially inoculated. This lecture links the history of racial oppression to contemporary times and helps work through some of the pitfalls of “privilege” such as, “How can white kids from Appalachia be ‘privileged?’”
The recorded session is available to all CSU faculty, staff, and students for educational purposes. Please first sign in to Office365 in order to access the recording.
