Outstanding Teacher Award - Mindy Van Kalsbeek, School of Social Work
The Outstanding Teacher Award honors an excellent teacher who exhibits superior and sustained performance in teaching that impacts student learning. On-campus and Extension faculty, with five or more years of experience in the College, with undergraduate, graduate, and/or off-campus teaching, are eligible for this award.

Mindy exemplifies dedication to student achievement and inclusivity, creating a genuine, supportive learning atmosphere. As the MSW Program’s Associate Director, her approach to fostering open dialogue, rigorous academics, and unwavering support has earned the admiration and trust of her students. Notably, her advocacy for students with disabilities and her initiative in leveraging campus resources for their success stands out. Additionally, her contributions to enhancing distance learning and adhering to CSU’s Teaching Effectiveness Framework have set new standards of excellence in the college.

The Tenure-Track Faculty Teaching Excellence Award recognizes a tenure-track faculty member (not yet tenured) for outstanding contributions in teaching during their period of appointment at Colorado State University. The intent of the award is to recognize a newer member of the faculty who demonstrates excellence in teaching.
Jain Kwon, Design and Merchandising
Jain embodies engaged teaching, instilling curiosity and problem-solving skills in her Interior Architecture and Design students. Her pedagogical approach breathes life into creative and critical thought, underscoring the pivotal role of design in society, especially through her capstone courses that address the multifaceted needs of diverse stakeholders. Jain’s commitment to embracing DEIJ and sustainability within her curriculum and her students’ comprehensive understand of meaningful design have earned accolades from industry experts. Jain’s mentorships extend to guiding students in research-driven projects, notably enhancing the Dean’s Office branding and wayfinding.
Early Career Non-Tenure-Track Faculty Teaching Award - Kim Schoessow-Aldaz, Occupational Therapy
The Non-Tenure-Track Faculty Early Career Teaching Award recognizes a faculty member (NTT) for outstanding contributions in teaching since the appointment to Colorado State University. The intent of the award is to recognize a newer member of the faculty who demonstrates excellence in teaching.
Kim Schoessow-Aldaz, Occupational Therapy
Since joining the faculty in 2020, Kim has made an indelible mark in teaching excellence, garnering notice from OT students for her effective teaching. Her instruction portfolio spans 10 varied, embracing both hybrid and newly development formats, showcasing her innovation and pedagogical creativity. Kim’s contributions have been instrumental in shaping the OTD curriculum, where her leadership in integrating DEI into theory and practical applications have elevated the educational standards to new heights. Her impactful teaching methods are mirrored in the success of her students, who have achieved a remarkable 100% pass rate in the demanding practicum-based courses.
Outstanding Adviser Award - Gene Gloeckner, Education
The Outstanding Adviser Award recognizes a faculty member or administrative professional staff member with three or more years of experience in the College who excels in undergraduate or graduate student advising and mentoring. Advising is the process of facilitating student academic and/or professional development.

Gene has been an exceptional mentor, dedicating his efforts to shaping the education of more than 70 graduate student advisees over the years. Many of his students have gone on to achieve great success in prestigious roles across the globe. His innovative and relational advising style has nurtured a culture of support and growth. Gene is known for his empathy and expertise, advocating for students from underrepresented backgrounds and bringing meaningful institutional changes to support their academic success. His inclusive ethos fosters a community where everyone feels they belong and supported in both academic and personal achievements. As we honor Gene with the Outstanding Adviser Award, we also celebrate his retirement. Gene’s legacy for student-centric approaches to advising and teaching will inspire us for years to come.
Scholarly Excellence Award - Tiffany Weir, Food Science and Human Nutrition
The Scholarly Excellence Award recognizes a tenured faculty member for outstanding contributions in original and theoretical research, creative works, or other forms of scholarly endeavor.
Tiffany Weir, Food Science and Human Nutrition
Tiffany has established herself as an international expert and leader on the gut microbiome. Her 84 publications in prestigious journals, and citations topping 7,000 demonstrate the importance and innovation of her work. Tiffany serves as Editor-in-Chief for Biofilms and Microbiomes, is a sitting member for the NIH study section Nutrition and Metabolism in Health and Disease, and reviews international research grants. Tiffany’s scholarly excellence is celebrated by more than 22 graduate students she has mentored and among her global scientific peers alike. Maintaining over $2 million in continuous external funding, and a recent CSU TUNE award, she is extending her impact to position CSU as a national leader in microbiome research.
Tenure-Track Faculty Scholarly Excellence Award - Mahmoud Shakouri, Construction Management
The Tenure-Track Faculty Scholarly Excellence Award recognizes a tenure-track faculty member (not yet tenured) for outstanding contributions in activities such as original and theoretical research, creative works, model development, research synthesis, policy research, and other forms of scholarly endeavor during their period of appointment at Colorado State University.
Mahmoud Shakouri, Construction Management
Mahmoud’s pioneering research focuses on enhancing the durability of concrete while integrating bio-materials for sustainable performance. With 38 peer-reviewed articles and 839 citations, Mahmoud’s work, notably on utilizing corn cob ash in concrete curing, marks a groundbreaking stride in reducing the industry’s carbon footprint. This innovative approach, coupled with exploration into bio-materials funded by Colorado’s Office of Economic Development and International Trade, demonstrates a rare bridge from basic to applied research. Supported by prestigious entities like the American Concrete Institute and the National Science Foundation, Mahmoud is advancing construction materials while improving sustainability.
Outstanding Engagement Award - Debbie Fidler, Human Development and Family Studies
The Outstanding Engagement Award is given to a faculty member, administrative professional member, or CHHS faculty/admin pro-based program team, with five or more years of experience in the College, who exemplifies the land-grant mission of developing and promoting partnerships, particularly in service to high-needs communities, and collaborations between campus and external partners for the benefit of the community, state, nation, and/or world.
Debbie Fidler, Human Development and Family Studies
Debbie is a national leader in intellectual and developmental disabilities research, showcasing remarkable achievements across academia, scholarship, and community engagement. She directs the Developmental Disabilities Research Laboratory and heads the Developmental Disabilities Division of the Prevention Research Center. Her pioneering work on cognitive processes in youth with Down syndrome has informed education and intervention strategies and garnered funding and media recognition. Through the Ram Scholars Program, a collaboration among HDFS, occupational therapy, and the College of Agricultural Sciences, Debbie fosters inclusive community partnerships, training individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities for agricultural careers, meeting their needs for community-engaged work and the industry’s need for a trained workforce.

The Superior Faculty Service Award is given to a faculty member, with five or more years of experience in the College, who has made significant service contributions to the College, University, professional, or other off-campus organizations.
Manfred Diehl, Human Development and Family Studies
Manfred’s tenure at CSU over the since 2006 is marked by impactful research, pivotal contributions to HDFS degree programs, and extensive service to the university, college, and profession. Named a University Distinguished Professor in 2017, his leadership establishing the Applied Developmental Sciences Ph.D. program is matched by his support for today’s rigorous and thriving program and successful graduates. Manfred has mentored faculty, reviewed NIH applications, and serves as Director of the HDFS Graduate Program. He has conducted high level service while simultaneously running a large research program and engaging in effective teaching and mentoring.

The Superior Staff Service Award is given to a staff member, with five or more years of experience in the College, who demonstrates outstanding achievement in performing their responsibilities, including efforts to create a climate of support for all in the unit.

Her expertise in communications, demonstrated through strategic storytelling across various platforms, has amplified the college’s visibility and engagement. Gretchen’s dedication to inclusivity and equity is evident in her meticulous approach to content creation and her commitment to fostering a welcoming environment. A mentor and leader, Gretchen has cultivated a thriving communications team and elevated universitywide standards. As she prepares for retirement, her legacy of excellence and forward-thinking strategy leaves an indelible mark on the college’s future.

The Faculty Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award recognizes a faculty member, with five or more years of experience in the College, for outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion with an emphasis on ameliorating inequities by developing or applying social justice initiatives.
Mehmet Ozbek, Construction Management
Mehmet is a catalyst for change, leading efforts to foster inclusivity and equity. From chairing the CM DEI committee and serving on the college committee, his multifaceted approach reflects a commitment to tangible progress. Collaborating to center DEI with CM industry partners and the American Society of Civil Engineers, he drives impactful conversations, through focus groups, workshops, initiatives, research, and national mentoring networks. His research underscores his dedication. Supported by the U.S. Department of Transportation, he seeks to inform state-level decision-making to incorporate social equity into infrastructure decisions. Mehmet is leading the way in creating diverse, equitable, and inclusive environments.

Avery’s swift ascent from student employee to a leadership role in college communications is due in part to his authentic approach to our DEI priorities. Shining through his storytelling is Avery’s commitment to amplify diverse voices and experiences through impactful videography, photography, social media, podcast, and web content. Beyond representation, Avery ensures our content is accessible for all. He applies his curiosity, innovation, and generosity as a mentor for other communicators. Avery is well-known for his genuine interest in diverse perspectives, making him an exemplary figure in promoting inclusivity and equity, extending from the College, across campus, and to our broader audiences.

The Outstanding Graduate Student Award recognizes a CHHS graduate student for outstanding performance in research, outreach/engagement, and/or creative endeavors.
Cali McEntee, Health and Exercise Science
Cali’s journey from M.S. to Ph.D. candidate has been marked by exceptional leadership and scholarly achievement. In Tom LaRocca’s Healthspan Biology Laboratory, Cali’s innovative research delves into unraveling the mechanisms of neurodegeneration, particularly in age-related diseases like Alzheimer’s. Her groundbreaking work on double-stranded RNA’s role in brain inflammation showcases her scientific acumen. Cali’s productivity is remarkable, evident in numerous publications and prestigious awards, including an F31 Pre-doctoral Fellowship. Beyond her research, Cali’s inclusive and supportive demeanor fosters a collaborative environment, making her a beacon of mentorship for fellow students. With her promising trajectory, Cali is poised to be a luminary in her field.
Outstanding Senior Award - Rachel Washburn, Health and Exercise Science
The Outstanding Senior Award recognizes a CHHS graduating senior for outstanding performance including academic achievement, leadership, research, service, and/or creative endeavors. Student must be an undergraduate student graduating in the academic year the award is bestowed (must have intent to graduate in the current academic year – Fall, Spring or Summer term).
Rachel Washburn, Health and Exercise Science
Rachel has taken her dynamic interdisciplinary interests and transformed them into impactful action! Her passion for the science of human aging has led her to pursue a Gerontology minor, focus her Honors thesis on promoting healthy aging, and play a crucial role as a research assistant on a federally funded initiative that supports grandparents raising grandchildren. Rachel is the President of the CSU Gerontology Club, where she has initiated numerous innovative initiatives, greatly enriching education on aging and fostering important intergenerational relationships among students and community members. Rachel’s commitment to excellence extends beyond academia – she volunteers extensively – one notable activity is her initiative to enhance older adults’ technological literacy. Her multifaceted leadership, dedication to community service, and academic achievement position her for continued success as she pursues her Occupational Therapy Doctorate at CSU.

Julia Murphy, Associate Registrar, Colorado State University
Julia’s significant contributions to our college include course scheduling and curricular administration, enhancing our educational environment and student success. From aligning course times and locations during the pandemic to our changing landscape today, Julia’s foresight and understanding help all of our academic units meet varying needs. Insightful and creative, she has enhanced our nursing program development, class shuffling for the Clark renovation, and other complicated planning with kindness, patience, and a wealth of knowledge. Julia is an invaluable asset to CSU and CHHS.
Friend of the College Award - Matt Rhodes
This award was created to recognize those individuals who have supported the college in extraordinary ways.
Matt Rhodes, former chair, Social, Behavioral, and Educational Research for CSU’s Institutional Review Board
Matt recently stepped down after having served as chair of Social, Behavioral, and Educational Research for CSU’s Institutional Review Board for a number of years. In his tenure, his committee saw many protocols every year from faculty, staff, and students in CHHS. Matt modeled both ethical rigor and the collaborative spirit needed to support the wide range of research activities that were reviewed by the committee. Matt’s service regularly included extended (and often last minute) consultation and guidance. His patience, his clear communication, and his support for investigators has been critical to the success of the research activities in CHHS.
Friend of the College Award – Nancy Richardson
This award was created to recognize those individuals who have supported the college in extraordinary ways.
Nancy Richardson (’82), co-founder of Blue Ocean Enterprises, Otterbox, OtterCares Foundation, The Richardson Foundation, and more.
Over the last decade, Nancy has been a critical partner to our college. Nancy encouraged us to dream big and facilitated the planning process to make design our dream into reality. The dream was interdisciplinary growth in design with faculty, students, alumni, industry, and community. The reality is the Nancy Richardson Design Center, where last week we celebrated 5 years of the building, and groundbreaking design thinking collaboration and education. But Nancy’s not done yet. She is still dreaming big and fostering continued conversations around a potential School of Design. Nancy’s enthusiasm and support drive transformation and make her a true Friend of the College!

Chris Martin, B.S., construction management, ’20
A standout graduate from the CSU Construction Management program in 2020, Chris Martin has swiftly ascended the ranks at Golden Triangle Construction. He began as a project engineer, and rapidly progressed to become a Senior Project Manager, a feat typically achieved after 15+ years of experience, in just four years. Chris’s exceptional career trajectory has paralleled his active involvement at CSU. He has returned to campus to provide guest lectures on construction roles and volunteering for student presentations. His success in industry and his commitment to community engagement exemplify his dedication to both personal achievement and fostering the development of future construction professionals.

Ashley Acuff, B.S., family and consumer sciences education, ’14
Ashley’s 2014 degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education helped launch her career and leadership development. Starting as a high school teacher and adviser, she swiftly ascended through various roles, including being the state adviser in Colorado for Technology Student Association. Her expertise led her to Tennessee, and a role with SkillsUSA, where she focused on workforce development through career and technical education for middle school through college students. She also relaunched the Nashville Ram Network. Now, as Executive Director for SkillsUSA in Georgia, she supports thousands of students and advisers statewide. Ashley’s career impact shines as brightly as her Ram Pride.

Joel is a 2003 construction management graduate whose remarkable leadership catapulted his career at JE Dunn Construction, where he currently serves as Vice President. Through a respect for the intricacies of working in tight urban environments, as well as the impact on the communities, their histories and futures, Joel has spearheaded award-winning construction projects in Denver. An ardent advocate for workforce development and construction education, Joel has impacted legislation, championed youth engagement, and modeled engagement in industry, government, education, and charitable organizations. His unwavering commitment, integrity, generosity, and genuine care for individuals epitomize his remarkable character and lasting impact.

Since earning her degree in human development and family studies, Michele has spent over four decades transforming the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As CEO of Hope Community Resources in Alaska, she embodies compassion and advocacy, fostering lifelong friendships and meaningful career opportunities. Michele’s commitment extends beyond her role, as she actively volunteers with Friends of Pets and mentors CSU students who intern at Hope Community Resources. Michele has helped thousands find homes, influenced legislative reforms, and helped others discover their passions in service to others. Michele’s impact resonates deeply, touching lives and inspiring future generations.
