Aging and Chronic Disease

Our research faculty use translational research methods to better understand the human body at a cellular level with the intention to extend the human healthspan. Some methods include stress resilience, mitochondrial functioning, blood flow, and oxygen delivery, and other physiological measurements.

Behavior and Lifestyle Modification

Our Behavior and Lifestyle Modification focused labs take a clinical approach to understand pre-existing factors and lifestyle choices that impact chronic injury and disease, including cancer. Their main objective is to understand how to help individuals, adapt, prevent, and/or recover from chronic disease and injury.

Functional Performance

This core research area tests the physiological limits of the human body and the metabolic implications of the circadian rhythm. Our research team develops and tests strategies to improve the body’s functional systems that ultimately lead to enhanced physical performance.

Neurological Function and Dysfunction

Our research group focuses on the impacts of impaired movement control and the brain’s sensorimotor integration system. They measure cognitive and motor functioning, with an emphasis on improving function and quality of life for individuals recovering from a stroke, transient ischemic attack, and those living with multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.

Study Overview

Researchers from the Health and Exercise Science Department at Colorado State University are recruiting participants for a study to explore the relationships between cellular stress, expression of certain genes, and how we age.

Why should I join this study?
- We will be measuring your biological age (the functional age of your cells rather than your age in years) and will provide you with that information.
- You will also be helping to advance research on healthy aging and exercise.
Participant Criteria
- Over the age of 18 years
- Free of chronic disease or illness
What will I be asked to do?
- You will be asked to complete surveys about your health
- You will be asked to complete cognitive and physical function tests
- You will be asked to provide a blood sample
- The total time commitment is ~2 hours

Study Overview

The Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University is conducting a study to determine the influence of short-term antibiotic therapy on exercise.

Brief Description
- Four study sessions (Up to 90 mins each)
- Treadmill exercise
- 5-days of antibiotic therapy
Participant Criteria
- Aged 18-40 years
- Regularly exercise
- Can run for 1-hour
- Use hormonal contraception (females only)
Participation will Involve
- Fitness testing
- Difficult exercise
- Blood sampling

Study Overview

Researchers from Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University are recruiting participants for a study to determine the effect of Sportlegs on exercise performance.

Why should I join this study?
- You will learn your VO2max, your lactate threshold, and together we will learn if Sportlegs influences exercise performance.
Participant Criteria
- Age 18-30 years (inclusive)
- Typically complete 150 minutes per week of endurance exercise
What will I be asked to do?
- You’ll be asked to visit the lab on six different days to complete maximal exercise on a cycle ergometer after swallowing Sportlegs.

Study Overview

The Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University is conducting a study to determine how regular cannabis use impacts responses to exercise.

Brief Description
- Three study sessions (90-120 mins each) - all sessions will be on-campus
- Running on a treadmill for up to an hour
- Having your blood drawn several times
Inclusion Criteria
- Aged 21-40 years
- Regularly exercise 5x/week
- Can run for 60 minutes
- Use cannabis at least 3x/week
Participation will Involve
- Fitness testing
- Treadmill running
- Blood sampling

Study Overview

This research study is looking at the effect of insufficient sleep on people. Sleeping too little and being awake at the wrong time can impact your ability to think, proteins and hormones in your blood, how your muscle and fat cells work, and many other things. This work will be important for people who do not get enough sleep, do shift work, and are at a high risk for developing diabetes and obesity.

Brief Description
- Two five-day laboratory stays separated by 1-2 months

Study Overview

This research study is aimed to answer whether or not changing the timing of eating can help reduce the risk of health problems in people who work the night shift. This work will help us understand why people who work night shift are at a greater risk for developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Brief Description
- Two, four-week meal-timing conditions separated by one month
- Two, two-day, in-laboratory stays separated by one month
Participation Criteria
- Current night shift workers
- Ages 30-55
Participation will Involve
- Eating a prescribed diet with all meals provided for two, four-week outpatient meal-timing conditions
- Blood draws
- Blood pressure assessments
- Muscle biopsies

- Up to $2,400
Study Overview

Majority of people with multiple sclerosis experience difficulty with balance and mobility, leading to an increased risk of falls. The goal of this clinical trial is to learn about brain activity during walking adaptation in people with multiple sclerosis. Also, this clinical trial will test a form of nerve stimulation to see if it can improve walking performance.

Brief Description
- What areas of the brain are the most active during walking adaptation?
- Can nerve stimulation make walking adaptation more effective?
Participation Criteria
- Ages 18-86 years
- A diagnosis of relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis OR a neurotypical adult (ages 18-86)
- Not experiencing an active relapse
- Able to stand and walk without an assistive device
- Able to walk for three tenths of a mile without stopping to rest
Participation will Involve
- Participants will walk on a treadmill where each leg will go a different speed which will create walking adaptation. At the same time, brain scans will occur.
- There will be two sessions of walking adaptation, one with nerve stimulation, and one without nerve stimulation.
- Researchers will compare people with multiple sclerosis to healthy young adults to see if there are differences in brain activity.

Study Overview

The purpose of this study is to measure brain activity changes in athletes with recent concussion while they complete cognitive, motor, and vision tasks. These findings will be used to help us better understand sports related concussion.

Brief Description
- This study includes 1-2 sessions that will last ~2 hours each at the Brainwaves Research Lab and SCORE Lab at Colorado State University
Participation Criteria
- Athletes in organized sports
- Ages 18-24 years
- A history of multiple (two or more) concussions in their lifetime*
Participation will Involve
- Wearing a cap, similar to a swim cap, with EEG sensors or fNIRS optodes will be placed on your head.
- While the cap is on your head, you will be asked to complete computer based tasks ( e.g. listening to tones, pressing buttons as quickly as possible) and other cognitive ( e.g. mental math ), motor e.g. walking) tasks or visual ( e.g. tracking a moving object) tasks.
Compensation
- Participants will be compensated with cash at a rate of $35/hour for a possible total compensation of $140-175.
