Health and Exercise Science Funding Opportunities
Graduate Teaching Assistantships
The Department supports some students by awarding graduate teaching assistantships. A GTA receives a monthly stipend for nine months and has their tuition paid. The tuition payment includes out-of-state tuition for the first year only. Out-of-state students are required to obtain in-state residency for the second year of their GTA.
GTAs are typically contractually obligated to approximately 20 hours per week. GTAs teach the equivalent of four classes, generally in laboratory or recitation sections of courses. Within the 20 hour commitment, GTAs prepare classes, teach classes, and hold office hours.
Graduate Service Assistantships
Graduate Service Assistantship positions are available in both the Adult Fitness Program and the Heart Disease Prevention Program. Students with an interest in clinical exercise physiology can compete for these GSA positions (note, students who opt for the clinical track can also be supported on traditional GTA funding).
Graduate Research Assistantships
Graduate Research Assistantships are offered as funding is available. An individual faculty member who has grant support funds these positions. Interested applicants should contact faculty directly to inquire about availability of a GRA position.
Doctoral Financial Support
Doctoral students are supported on GRA positions, as a rule. Some mixed support can occur via a funding proposal to the department head that includes GTA support on occasion. Other financial support may be available through the Graduate School. It is to the benefit of the out-of-state student to obtain in-state residency.
Criminal Background Checks
Students with University employment, and/or requiring access to University buildings, and/or working with specific populations will be required to undergo a criminal background check.
