Our field agencies make it possible for students to integrate social work knowledge from the classroom together with applied practice skills. With the support and guidance of field instructors, on-site supervisors, field agencies and organizations, CSU students experience the challenges and opportunities of social work practice. If you are interested in hosting social work interns, please read “Information for New Agencies” below, and fill out the Agency Interest Form.
Information for New Agencies
Our social work education program prepares students for social work practice from a generalist and advanced generalist perspective through a competency-based education framework that integrates ADEI (anti-oppressive, anti-racist, diversity, equity, and inclusion) approaches, multi-level assessment and intervention with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. A central component of social work education is the Field Education Internship which requires social work supervision and agency collaboration on students Learning Plan, Progress Report(s) and Final Evaluation.
Students enter our programs with varying identities, levels of skills and life experiences. The internship is an opportunity for students to apply a holistic approach and their educational knowledge through observation, practice, and supervision. This is also a great opportunity for students to build new skills and be exposed to new learning and growth.
BSW: Undergraduate students receive a generalist program of study and must complete an internship during their senior year.
MSW: Graduate students receive an advanced generalist program of study and must complete two internships: generalist internship during year one and an advanced generalist internship during year two. Our MSW Program includes a full-time on-campus program and a part-time, distance-hybrid program. The latter enables students to access our program and remain in their home communities for their internship(s).
Each internship is assigned a Field Liaison who supports, consults, and maintains contact with the Internship Team (student and the agency) throughout the placement term. All members of the Internship Team are provided with a required orientation before the internship starts. Field Liaisons receive continual support and work in collaboration with the Field Education Team.
If you have questions or would like ot further discuss our program or students, please contact a member of the Field Education Team.
