BSW Field Education - SOWK 488
The BSW field program is designed to provide our students with the opportunity to apply theories and practice skills learned in the classroom to a direct practice experience in our approved social work field agencies.
Students are challenged with learning assignments that aim at increasing their skill level to that of a professional generalist social worker: one who can work competently with individuals, families, groups, and communities at the foundation level of social work practice.
The BSW field program requires 450 hours of field practice. Students can chose to fulfill these hours in one semester at 28 hours per week, or in two concurrent semesters at 14 hours per week for summer and fall semesters and 19 hours per week during the summer semester.
MSW Field Education - SOWK 588/688
Preparing students for advanced generalist practice is the focus of the field education portion of the MSW program. During field placement students work toward mastery of the foundation-level and concentration-level social work competencies and practice behaviors.
Our MSW programs, with one exception, require two field placements. The first placement requires that students complete 270 internship hours. Foundation-level field placements in the full-time on-campus program span one semester; placements in the part-time distance program span two semesters.
The second placement requires 675 internship hours. Concentration-level field placements in the full-time on-campus program span two semesters; placements in the part-time distance program span from two to five semesters. (There are fewer scheduled hours per week in the distance program.)
Advanced-standing students complete one field placement of 675 internship hours. Students with a BSW from an accredited school may be admitted as advanced-standing students in the Advanced Standing MSW program.
All field placements are structured around the CSWE Core Competencies. Whether students choose a field placement in a micro or macro setting, all students will engage in learning in all competency areas during their internship.
