Why Choose a Lactate Threshold Test?
Lactate threshold testing measures the point during exercise when lactate—a byproduct of energy production—starts to accumulate rapidly in the bloodstream. This threshold signals when your body shifts from primarily aerobic energy systems to more anaerobic ones, meaning you’re approaching the intensity level that can’t be sustained for long without fatigue.
Knowing your lactate threshold is important because it gives you a clear, personalized understanding of your endurance limits. It helps you train smarter by identifying the optimal intensity for improving performance, building stamina, and avoiding overtraining. Whether you’re an athlete or someone simply working to improve fitness, understanding your lactate threshold can help you make the most of your workouts and track your progress over time.
What to Expect
Your Lactate Threshold Test Experience
- You may choose to complete this test on a treadmill or a stationary bike. We can also perform the test on a personal bike connected to a Wahoo Kickr if compatible.
- You will perform an incremental exercise test and run at various sub-maximal paces or cycle at various power outputs. The intensity will increase in periods of 3 or 4-minute stages, and blood samples will be taken at the end of each stage.
- Lactate is measured during the test by collecting small amounts of blood via an earlobe or finger prick.
- Appointments last 60 minutes with 30-45 minutes spent exercising.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is lactate?
Lactate is a metabolic byproduct produced during glucose metabolism that acts as a fuel source during exercise.
Does it hurt to get the blood samples?
Not significantly — just a quick finger prick every four minutes during exercise. Most people describe it as a brief pinch, and the discomfort is minimal.
Is the test only for elite athletes?
Not at all! While commonly used by competitive athletes, it’s also valuable for recreational exercisers, new runners, or anyone wanting to train more efficiently or monitor endurance progress.
What will my results tell me?
Your results will show your lactate threshold, heart rate, pace, and power output. These can be used to define personalized training zones and help structure workouts that align with your fitness goals.
